NVIDIA's RTX 3060 Ti card launched in December 2020, a few months before the RTX 3060 (12GB). This card uses a cut-down version of the larger GA104 chip (the same chip used in the RTX 3070) instead of the smaller GA106 chip in the RTX 3060. This is why the RTX 3060 Ti comes very close to the RTX 3070 in terms of clock speeds, and its memory system (256-bit bus) is also exactly the same as the RTX 3070.
This card caused quite a stir at launch, as it outperformed previous-generation high-end cards like the RTX 2080 Super, and at a much lower price. This is why the RTX 3060 Ti is considered one of the best price-to-performance cards in the entire Ampere series.
Performance and Architecture
The RTX 3060 Ti features 4864 CUDA Cores, significantly more than the RTX 3060 (3584). Boost clocks range from 1665 MHz to 1770 MHz depending on the model, with factory-overclocked variants (like the MSI Gaming X Trio) reaching as high as 1830 MHz. This card is also built on Samsung's 8nm process and supports both RT Cores and Tensor Cores from the Ampere architecture.
Support for DirectX 12 Ultimate, OpenGL 4.6, and Vulkan makes this card well-compatible with modern gaming technologies. NVIDIA DLSS, ray-tracing, NVIDIA Reflex, and NVIDIA Studio driver support (for content creators) are also included. Smooth gaming features like G-Sync and Adaptive Vertical Sync are also available.
Memory and memory bandwidth
This card features 8GB of GDDR6 video memory, running at speeds of up to 14 Gbps over a 256-bit memory interface. This provides memory bandwidth of up to 448 GB/s, which is significantly better than the RTX 3060 (360 GB/s) and comparable to the RTX 3070. This wide memory system gives this card a significant advantage in high-resolution and texture-heavy games, although 8GB of VRAM is less than the 12GB of RTX 3060.
Display Output and Connectivity
The RTX 3060 Ti features 3x DisplayPort 1.4a and 1-2x HDMI 2.1 outputs (depending on model), supporting resolutions up to 4K@120Hz and 8K@60Hz. The card can connect up to 4 displays simultaneously. The PCI Express 4.0 x16 interface allows for full bandwidth utilization with the latest motherboards. SLI/NVLink support is not available.
Cooling and Build
The card comes in a dual- or triple-slot design, with lengths ranging from 269mm to 301mm depending on the model. Most variants come with dual-fan (e.g. ASUS Dual, Gigabyte GAMING OC) or triple-fan (e.g. MSI Gaming X Trio, ASUS TUF Gaming) cooling designs, which keep the card at a stable temperature even under heavy gaming and ray-tracing loads.
Things to keep in mind during installation
Ensure the card is seated correctly in the PCIe x16 slot and connect the power connector (1-2x 8-pin, or 8-pin + 6-pin, depending on the model). The recommended PSU is 650-750W, which is slightly higher than the RTX 3060 (12GB), so be sure to check the power supply's capacity. Download the GeForce Game Ready or Studio drivers from NVIDIA's official website.
Who is this graphics card for?
The RTX 3060 Ti is a great option for users who want both high settings and ray-tracing in 1440p gaming, at a lower price than high-end cards. For those confused between the RTX 3060 (12GB) and the RTX 3060 Ti, the simple rule is this – if you want more raw gaming performance, choose the 3060 Ti, and if you need more VRAM (for AI/ML workloads or future heavy games), the 12GB RTX 3060 is better.
