AMD's Radeon RX 5600 XT card launched in January 2020 and is built on the RDNA architecture (first generation), using the same Navi 10 chip as the RX 5700. This card features the same 2304 Stream Processors as the RX 5700, but the memory configuration has been reduced – it has 6GB (192-bit bus) memory instead of the RX 5700's 8GB (256-bit bus).
Leaked information ahead of launch also revealed that AMD intentionally kept the card's stock clock speeds low to maintain a performance gap with the RX 5700 – similar to what NVIDIA did with the GTX 1070 Ti against the GTX 1080. However, AIB partners later significantly increased the card's clock speeds through BIOS updates, unlocking its true potential.
Performance and Architecture
The RX 5600 XT features 2304 Stream Processors (36 Compute Units), 144 Texture Units, and 64 ROPs. Base clocks range from 1130-1420 MHz, game clocks from 1375-1615 MHz, and boost clocks from 1620-1750 MHz, depending on the model—this wide range is because AIB partners significantly increased the factory clocks via BIOS updates. The card is built on a 7nm process (TSMC) and features approximately 10.3 billion transistors.
DirectX 12 and OpenGL support are also included in this card, along with features like AMD FreeSync 2 HDR, Radeon Chill (power savings), Radeon ReLive (streaming/capture), and AMD Eyefinity Technology (multi-display). PCI Express 4.0 support made this card one of the first to support this new standard at launch.
Memory and memory bandwidth
This card features 6GB of GDDR6 video memory, running at speeds of 12-14 Gbps (depending on the model and BIOS mode) over a 192-bit memory interface. At 14 Gbps, this provides approximately 288 GB/s of memory bandwidth, while some models drop slightly to 12 Gbps in "silent mode." This memory system is more than sufficient for 1080p gaming.
Display Output and Connectivity
The RX 5600 XT features a combination of 3x DisplayPort and 1x HDMI outputs. The card supports output up to 4K resolution and is also VR Ready. The PCI Express 4.0 x16 interface allows the card to utilize full bandwidth with the latest motherboards, while remaining backward compatible with older PCIe 3.0 motherboards.
Cooling and Build
The card features a dual-slot design and measures around 267mm in length, depending on the model. Most variants feature dual-fan cooling designs (e.g., the Sapphire PULSE Dual-X, ASRock Challenger D, XFX THICC III), and also include features like a metal backplate and dual BIOS support (for switching between performance mode and silent mode).
Things to keep in mind during installation
Ensure the card is seated correctly in the PCIe x16 slot and the 8-pin power connector is connected. The recommended PSU is 550W, while typical board power is around 150-160W. Download the Adrenalin driver from AMD's official website. Some variants feature a dual BIOS, allowing you to switch between performance and silent modes.
Who is this graphics card for?
The RX 5600 XT is an excellent option for users seeking a 1080p high-framerate gaming experience on a budget. With a core count similar to the RX 5700, this card can deliver performance very close to the RX 5700 if you choose the right BIOS/OC variant. It's a reliable performer for esports titles, AAA games, and users seeking good power efficiency.
