AMD's Radeon RX 580 card launched in April 2017 and is built on the Polaris 20 XTX architecture. Essentially, this card is a refined version of the previous-generation RX 480, with slightly increased clock speeds to eke out better performance. This is why the RX 580 surpasses the RX 570 in handling 1080p high settings and even light 1440p gaming with ease.

This card earned the tag of "best value for money" at its launch, as its performance was significantly better than its price. Later, during the crypto mining boom, the card was also extremely popular, thanks to its good compute performance and efficiency—so it's important to check the card's history when buying second-hand.

Performance and Architecture

The RX 580 features 2304 Stream Processors, 144 Texture Units, and 32 ROPs. Core clocks range from 1257 MHz to 1366 MHz depending on the model, while factory-overclocked variants (such as the MSI Gaming X, Sapphire NITRO+) can even boast boost clocks of 1380-1411 MHz.

Support for DirectX 12, OpenGL 4.5, OpenCL 2.0, and the Vulkan API makes this card well-compatible with modern gaming technology. AMD FreeSync 2, Radeon Chill, ReLive Capture, and CrossFireX support are also included. This card is also VR-ready.

Memory and memory bandwidth

This card features 4GB of GDDR5 video memory (an 8GB variant is also available), running at effective speeds of 7000-8100 MHz (varies depending on the model) over a 256-bit memory interface. This provides memory bandwidth of up to 224 GB/s. Its slightly higher clock speeds compared to the RX 570 result in slightly better real-world gaming performance, especially in high-resolution and texture-heavy games.

Display Output and Connectivity

The RX 580 typically offers a combination of 2-3 DisplayPort 1.4, 1-2 HDMI 2.0b, and a Dual-Link DVI-D output (varying by model). The card supports digital resolution output up to 4096x2160. The PCI Express 3.0 x16 interface allows it to seamlessly integrate with any modern motherboard, and there's also the option to increase performance by combining two cards via CrossFireX.

Cooling and Build

Most variants of the RX 580 come with dual-fan cooling designs, such as Gigabyte's WINDFORCE 2X (with RGB Fusion 2.0), Sapphire's Dual-X (with NITRO Glow), and MSI's Twin Frozr. Card lengths range from 23cm to 27cm depending on the model, so a mid-tower or full-tower cabinet is recommended. Power consumption ranges from 150W-185W, slightly higher than the RX 570, so cooling is also needed.

Things to keep in mind during installation

Ensure the card is seated correctly in the PCIe x16 slot and the 8-pin power connector is connected. The recommended PSU is 500W, so be sure to check the power supply's capacity. Download the Adrenalin driver from AMD's official website. When purchasing a second-hand card, be sure to check the card's mining history, fan bearing noise, and thermal paste condition, as it may have been used under heavy load for a long period of time.

Who is this graphics card for?

The RX 580 4GB is an excellent choice for users who want the most gaming performance on a budget—whether it's 1080p high settings or light 1440p gaming. This card remains a strong performer for AAA titles, esports games, and content creation. For those looking for even more headroom than the RX 570, it's the next logical step.

RX 580 4GB Price (New vs Second-Hand)

Type Price Range
New (if available) Some online resellers sell old stock for between β‚Ή15,000 – β‚Ή19,000
Second-hand/used market Approximately β‚Ή6,500 – β‚Ή10,000 (depending on condition, mining history and warranty status)

Note: This card was also widely used during the crypto mining boom, so be sure to have the card's condition, fan bearings, and thermal performance tested when purchasing it secondhand. This card has been discontinued, so "new" units are difficult to find, and most purchases are made on the secondhand market.
